Purchasing a villa in Spain is the gateway to an extraordinary lifestyle. When relocating, legalising your vehicle is an essential practical step. Non-residents may drive on foreign number plates for up to 6 months per calendar year; beyond that, Spanish registration is legally mandatory. Here is how to complete the process smoothly.

1. ESSENTIAL VEHICLE DOCUMENTATION

  • Original Vehicle Logbook & Technical Sheet: Official registration papers from the origin country.
  • Sales Contract or Purchase Invoice: Accompanied by a sworn Spanish translation if in another language.
  • European Certificate of Conformity (COC): Issued by the manufacturer verifying EU compliance (otherwise, obtain a technical fiche from an official Spanish automotive engineer).
  • Single Administrative Document (DUA): Required for vehicles imported from non-EU countries (such as post-Brexit UK or Switzerland).

2. STEP-BY-STEP PROCEDURE

  1. Pass the Import ITV Inspection: Book a pre-registration technical inspection at your nearest local ITV station to obtain the Spanish technical sheet.
  2. Settle Applicable Taxes:
    • Special Registration Tax (Model 576): Calculated on vehicle CO2 emissions (exemption applies if registered within 60 days of taking up official Spanish tax residency).
    • Municipal Road Tax (IVTM): Paid directly to your local town hall.
    • Property Transfer Tax (ITP): If acquired from a private individual.
  3. Submit Registration to the DGT: Attend the Provincial Traffic Department (Jefatura de Tráfico) to pay the fee and receive your official Spanish registration certificate.
  4. Produce and Mount Spanish Number Plates: Fabricate physical acrylic or metal plates at an authorized supplier and install them.

3. APPROXIMATE COST BREAKDOWN

• ITV Import Inspection: €100 – €180
• Technical Certificate (if lacking COC): €70 – €150
• DGT Official Fee: ~€99.77
• Municipal Road Tax (IVTM): €40 – €150
• Physical Plates: €20 – €40
